A well known Kirkwall character Tucker Laird on the right,
outside what is now Focus on Orkney.
I am told it used to be a cafe owned by Dougie ? Lloyds parents in the 60s-70s.

Alan, have a look at my comment on picture #579 re 'Crawford's Cafe'. It was a real nice cafe - fitted out with hard-wood linings and shelves. They sold ice cream and lots of sweets out of large jars. There were a few tables with chairs outside the counter. Douglas Crawford Snr. always wore a white shop-coat as was the norm. in those days (if I remember correctly he smoked a pipe!)

Your comments bring back loads of memories Robert. I was only about five at the time when I remember going to Mr Lloyd's for an ice cream with my "big" sister Carol Ann. The counter was so high and packed with all sorts of goodies that I could never see Mr. Lloyd but one day he did pop his head out from above the counter and I got such a fright as he looked frozen. He had very sharp features and spoke very slowly. He kindly came around to the front of the shop to give us the ice cream. He looked so thin in his white overall. It just made me think that he came from another planet! My sister just about died when I said, "Is that Mr. Frozen Face?" She grabbed me, red faced, and hurried out of the shop.
We still laugh about this today amongst other things of course!

In my description above I refer to 'Douglas Crawford Snr.' This should of course read 'Douglas Lloyd Snr.'
