This building was on Great Western Road. It was part of the WWII Toc H complex, then it was the canteen of the first Community Centre, after which it was an OIC workshop.
[It was where the Police Station car park is these days- note the 'N' of 'FIRE STATION' on the left of the picture. - Steven]

Think this was used a Community Centre canteen run by Jock Sutherland assisted by Ally Kirkpatrick's mother and other ladies I can't remember, before they moved to former Post Office in St Magnus Lane early 60's when new PO opened in Junction Road

This was indeed the Community Centre canteen. My father, Eric Windwick, was the first caretaker.

I remember going into this community centre in Great Western Road with my father, Jimmy Laughton, who was a bus driver in the 1950's. It was a great hang-out for the bus drivers who had to spend some hours in Kirkwall, waiting for their return trips. They played darts and were served hot drinks and eatables, and I remember a big hot stove at which they could warm themselves before heading back out into the cold weather. It had a very welcoming atmosphere.
