Eyesore

This is the first glimpse of Kirkwall for visitors coming in from the West. This must be our biggest eyesore - besides the Sports Centre.

Comments:
The Sports Centre :-) at least the power station was useful and not a burden to the taxpayer.
Slow down Sandy, hard to keep up with your output.

I quite like the power station. I'm a bit biased as I studied construction at Uni but I like the way the drums and tanks stands out against the stone work of the main building... I think the new blue building beside it is ugly.

I note that these chimneys etc., are not visible in an early photo of the Power Sation picture #839. See also picture #3595 and picture #3646. Enjoy!

Long live eyesores, This one is a lot better like than the new builds in and around the town today. At least this one was of some use to everyone and not a thorn in the tax payers side...

Yes, it WAS of some use, but what does it usefully do now?

It stands there as a proud part of history, Should think about turning it into a visitor's centre like they did in Lyness. Ok this is getting daft now :)

It will provide back up power to all your homes and workplaces in the event of a sub sea-cable fault. As for the Sports Centre it blends in extremely well when viewed from the top of the cathedral tower not like some of the other eysores in Kirkwall such as supermarkets, telephone exchange, ice plant and the schools to the east of Kirkwall

Weel bairns, so hids a peedie bit useful - bit hids still a blooming EYESORE.
I wonder when it was last gunned up in an emergency? The building itself
is not too bad - its all the stuff behind it that sticks oot like a sore thoomb when you come ower Hastson Brae

Yes OK it is a bit o an eyesore but hay could be worse, could be a big white radioactive lump like they have across the Firth...if they ever did get rid o the power station I wonder what would be built in its place ? Better the devil you know !!

Aye, I think we'll just accept it Colin. The mind boggles at what they might replace it with.
