Albert Maxwell was a prominent Kirkwall businessman who owned and ran a general merchants shop at 'The Brig' - now the Frozen Food Centre.
The business was taken over by Bertie Robertson from Robertson's shop in St Margarets Hope in the mid-1950's. My father, Wilbert Thomson took it over around 1960 - see seperate photos.

Albert`s older sister, Clara Maxwell was my maternal Grandmother. I remember the shop when it was still run by Albert. The family lived `over the shop`.

Sorry to really spoil your day Clare but we must be related. My grandmother was a cousin of Albert. I do remember a little about him in the shop but only just. Did he stay with his sisters ? Were they called Edith and Alice or did i dream that?

You are quite right. Alice and Edith were the youngest of five girls. Albert had Three older brothers. He was the baby of the family. I have lots of old Orkney family photos which I am in the process of sorting through. Amongst them, I found one of Rhoda (aged 21 months, (Iona), who I am now in touch with. She spoke of Ernest Cooper.

Rhoda is a bit more than 21 months now. She comes up to Orkney for a holiday most years now since she retired. She always comes along to visit us. The Ernest she spoke of was my uncle.
