I might be wrong, but that looks like Hoy in the background - as it appears when viewed from Caithness. Anyone near Thurso?

Karl, I thought exactly as you did. I would also say it was Hoy - taken from the Scottish Mainland. It's a view you can't forget when you've not been home for years and you're longing for the boat to come to take you there!

Indeed it is, thats a ship in anchor at the Thurso roads, the pic being taken from the start of the Victoria walk where the campsite is. Not sure about 1966? But when the caithness flagstone quarries were at there peak early 20th century there were always schooners anchored there waiting for high tide so they could sail into the harbour at Thurso River to load up woth flags to take round the world for paving stones.

I used to think when I lived in Thurso in the 1970's that home (Longhope) was so near yet so far when I looked across as we drove along from work at Dounreay and saw that view.
