I wonder if this is as early as 1910 given the lack of foreshore in front of the old mill. I would suspect this might have been taken around the time that the excavations under the dirction of Professor V Gordon Childe started, i.e., from 1927 when 'Mr J. Firth, contractor, Kirkwall, commenced clearing out the actual ruins under the direction of Mr C.R. Peers, Chief Inspector (Ministry of Ancient Monuments] and Mr J. Wilson Paterson, Architect-in-Charge, assisted by Mr J. Hourston as surveyor'. [from Skara Brae, a Pictish Village in Orkney, V. Gordon Childe, 1931.
