This photo has a couple of connections with Orkney, but the one I'm making is that the man in stroke position is Ian Pole who appears in picture #28108.

The beautiful boat is based on a traditional skiff but built by untraditional methods, involving lots of glue but no nails. Ian made her oars.

It was the first time I'd met him, despite his having spent more time in Orkney than he ever did in his native Shetland. (Hadn't lost his Shetland accent though.) A delightful man, whom many Orcadians will know well, as their former schoolteacher, work colleague on Flotta, or friend - or all three.
