Sisters

In support of my contention in a comment on picture #27151 that my Mum and her sisters were easy on the eye, here's a couple of pics isolated from small group snaps of my mother (R) and her sister Anna(bella) in their twenties - about a century ago. Unfortunately I couldn't find a suitable picture of sister Betty to complete the good-looking trio.
All three girls lost boyfriends in the Great War. Mother was the only one to later marry a survivor (by the skin of his teeth) of that terrible waste of Orkney's young men.

[I think the picture number is wrong here Ian - Steven]

I was speaking to a local woman not long before she died and mentioned a nice locket she was wearing. Now Barbara was a stern and rather stiff lady all the time I knew her and indeed I was surprised I had made mention of the locket to her . She took off the locket and opened it to show me a photo of a young naval Officer and with tears in her eyes she said "I was engaged to marry this man but he was killed in action early in WWII" I was taken aback by her sad words as I had only seen her as a hard career woman but life had dealt her a blow she never recovered from as she never married or had another partner in life. I am sure this was a story that was in so many more who lost loved ones through war.
