The year is a guess but I think it is early sixties. Does anyone know the band. Is it Eddie Edmonds? I believe the council cutbacks announced this week means that their is no funding available to erect the bandstand for this years Shopping Week (does this mean flags and lights are next). Surely elected councillors this is blinkered vision, Shopping Week attracts many many visitors and exiles into Orkney.

I would recommend that the council puts the stage and the flags up and the shopping week committe make a small contribution.
The tacky lights (which are the wonderful display of christmas lights) are not needed, after all its the middle of summer with long day light, whats the point of putting them up they are a disgrace whether at christmas or during shopping week.Sooner or later the coloured bulbs will need renewed and they should be replaced with proper festive displays which will no longer be appropriate for shopping week.
