The Sea Cadets on Parade
Picture added on 21 November 2011 at 12:00
It's nice to see someone has taken a photo of the Youth Movements as they rarely appear in the newspaper. At this time of year it shouldn't be forgotten that the youth movements did a lot of work helping with the war aid in both wars and many of them lost their lives doing so.

Willie, what ever happened to the cadets launch PLD 4309?
Added by Gordon Stove on 25 November 2011
I don't know but Sandy Firth will know
Added by Willie Watters on 26 November 2011
From Sandy Firth: PLD 309 was used for sea angling by having the stern section of the cabin removed. She was also, for a short time in Loch Ness or at Inverness 'Touristing'. The last time I saw her she was lying alongside at Helmsdale in a very poor state, but still recognisable. I did not have a camera with me unfortunately. Her stem (Always a problem) seemed to have finally opened up, but as I was up on the main road I'd no chance of a close inspection.

Wae towed that cadet launch fae the east side o Sooth Ronaldsay tae Stromness as she had developed a problem wae her tail shaft.
Onboard that evening were some of our now well known and respected Master Mariners as young lads.
I can remember one lad informing our second Coxwain who was in charge that night that he was not showing the correct towing lights!! Billy said who the hell is that cocky wee bu**er!!, Well that cocky wee bu**er has now been a Master Mariner for many years!!.
Orkney has a lot to thank Robby Sutherland, Sandy Firth and all in Stromness who gave guidance to so many young lads back then.
