Comments:
BS 5389 was a Standard 10 supplied new from Rossland Garage to Mr T Mainland, Main Street, Kirkwall on 28th April 1958. From the records it looks as though he traded it in for a second-hand 1961 Ford Consul in "Ming Yellow" on 21st November 1964. Six days later the Standard was sold on to a Mr J Mowat of Sclater Street.

Looks like a meeting of the radio hams.

Ah yes Paul, that would be Tom Mainland , he was a pal of my father in law Andy Wylie. At the top of Wideford, either radio ham or Royal Observer Corps business . A bunker up there where they were to retire in the event of the bomb going off.

Mr Mowat would be Jacko Mowat the ambulance driver.

My first car was a Standard 10 - shae wiz white wae a black roof and was Caithness reg SK---- I had a great time wae that car the engine was knackered but I obtained a Standard 8 which I fitted and it ran as quiet as a moose bit there wisna a lot speed in it,and that probibly saved me life as a young fellow, and you could slide the front seats aff there runners and turn them "sideie wize" and gave you a lot o room, and that is as rar as aam goan wae that story.
Me faither had the car afore he died in 1969 and I think shae was aboot 8 year owld when he bought her.
The bits and pieces that was needed for the car came fae Rossland Garage on the back road (Were they the agents for Standard Triumph cars Paul?)
Isaac Moar had the Estate model here on Hoy, they had a cranked gear leaver I mind.

That's right, John, Standard, Triumph and for a time in the sixties Singer too. I still have some bits for them in a shed somewhere, including I think a reconditioned Standard 8 engine - probably a bit rusty now!

The Standard Vanguard used the same engine as was fitted to the peedie grey Fergie made by the Standard Motor Company, they were a bit hard on the juice and a heavy car.

Old Hughie Seatter had a Vanguard when I was peedie wae a kinda roondie back on it no doot the wise owld Hamilton man fae Crockness will mind its regestration number(Is anes like that no jist "seeknan")!!.

Jimmmy Johnston (Brims) had a Vanguard van.
Old Hughie's Jowett was yellow when new, he got it resprayed as it was a bit conspicuous when parked in a favourite place.

The Bedford van belonged to my dad, Jack Twatt. He's there in the back of it chatting on an amateur band. He was GM3CCK.
There was probably an Royal Observer Corps exercise going on around there too.
