I've heard of people gassing on the phone all day, but does BT really need to collect all the gas?

You see the same across the road from Mills Filling Station too, Lot o gas around the town. Who needs windmills !!

I'm sure I've seen the same at the foot of Hatston brae above the roundabout.

This is an experimental system on field trial by BT to pressurise the underground network to blow carbon monoxide gas out of the ducts.
