Down by the Golden Wharf

A poor quality polaroid instant photo from my folks collection (using under the oxter for a few minutes development)
I think this must be the year of the Queen's Jubilee. The question is what were they all doing- it looks like it's down the way of the golden wharf? I wasn't in Orkney then so have no idea.
My dad David Gillespie, Jimmy Sutherland, Geordie Taylor, my brother Mervyn Gillespie and Malcolm Robertson at the back.

I mind the day fine, it was indeed the Queen's Silver Jubilee. The Coast Guards along wae the Lifeboat did a display at the piers at Lyness. There was sports at the football field beside the Social Club and a Bonfire and barbeque at the top o Wee Fea at night.

Na Na that cinna be 25 year ago is it!!

The local Coast Guard don't have that heavy equipment anymore, their role in lifesaving has changed fae the days when I think there were ower 20 men in the team.

The local team I believe still hold the world record for the longest breaches bouy rescue when they saved the crew from the Strathelliot, ashore at Selwick in Hoy in 1952?.

They joined two hawsers together brought over by Stromness Lifeboat and performed a superb rescue on a very poor night in a blizzard. Our father was part of the team and got chilled and was in bed several days afterwards.

The Local Coastguard Auxiliary team put on a display at Lyness on the Jubilee, Gala Day. My guess is that this is them setting up the gear.

The Queen's Silver Jubilee was in 1977 folks, I was in Kirkwall at the time and they put on some sort of a show in the Bignold Park. Horse jumping, pipe band etc. and lit a beacon on Wideford Hill, There was a dance in the Albert Hotel at night which I was at!
