This is truly unearthly beauty. Maybe someone should make a 3D film about Orkney!

Thanks Peggy. We had just walked down from The top of the Old Man. Could see storm clouds, with beams of sunshine belting through. I was in the company of 3 climbers who have climbed all over the world. The lead climber (who has featured in geographical documentaries) stood there and said "That is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. If you were to paint it, folk would say you'd overdone the artistic licence" Photo really doesn't do it justice.

Thanks, Stuart. I was last in Orkney in the '70s but am an avid viewer of photos on this site, and this may be the most beautiful I have ever seen. It's like Orkney through the eye of God.

The feature I remember most about Orkney is the ever-shifting light, so difficult to capture in any still photo, but you have definitely caught the magic.

Thanks Peggy. My regret is that the battery on my SLR was flat so had to use my phone camera. The photo posted is at full resolution so any chance of me producing a decent size print is limited. I would love to have this on my wall, it's a definate keeper.

Darn, Stuart! I was going to ask you if there was any way of buying a good print!

One of the most beautiful things I've ever seen was similarly unexpected - perhaps more so since it was in an urban environment. I was walking to work in downtown San Diego when a combination of morning light and streamers of bright white fog (radiating outward from a cluster of office towers) made the normally skyline look like a celestial explosion. This was not long after 9/11.... A few people walking or commuting were staggered by the beauty, but I couldn't even make joggers (with headphones, of course) stop and look up at the most amazing thing they might see in their lifetimes!

Of course, such moments are more likely in Orkney.

[Peggy- you can answer an argument here. There is a futuristic building that appears throughout Demolition Man (starring Stallone and Bullock) that I maintain is the San Diego Convention Centre... - Steven]

It is indeed the San Diego Convention Center - I live a few blocks from there and recognized it immediately. You win!

[Excellent! I was there for a conference in 1992 and the building made an impression! - Steven]
