I have just received a very interesting email from Peter Burges so I am going to print it as he sent it. Phil....

I just wonder if its possible that this could be OXY JOCK who I remember living in stables at the back o what is now the Arts Theatre in Mill Street,Access also from Queen Street. Jock Magee wis his real name and his wife wis Maggie Magee and they had a dowter too. The Dowter went to Canada I believe eventually. Jock's Fether afore him hid a smallholding somewhere oot in St.Ola and they conducted a Karting Business using an OX to pull the Cart. They used the Stables off Queens Street as their "Town Residence" and lived in the Loft above. I cant say for any certainty that this is indeed him,but immediately I saa this he came into my mind. You can quote me if you like with this story for what I tell you is old Kirkwall History. I used to live in Bridge St,Lane and went to School in that area, that wisna yesterday.

Best regards,Peter.

PS.OX carts were very common long ago I believe,so it's very possible it might not be him.So ends Peter's quote and fastinating it is too.I remember my father speaking about OXY JOCK'S, the area in question behind the Arts Theatre and we used to go through it to school. Thanks to Peter for stirring the memory once more.Added by Phil Brough.

Just a guess Phil but could that be South Ronaldsay on the horizon to the left and Stanger Head in Flotta above the right hand child's head, which would mean the photo was taken above Lingro. If so, could the house at the extreme right be Grassethowe? Going on the shadows that would then be a morning photo.

I think you are spot on Dave, it would fit in well with Peter's comments on OXY JOCK. Added by Phil Brough.

I wonder if the Magee family show up in the 1891 or 1901 Kirkwall and St Ola census? That might help locate the smallholding.
