Catch 'em young.
My Aunt Anna would have been about 8 yrs old when admitted to the Band of Hope in 1906. Unlike many of her co-signatories, she adhered to all the precepts set out on this certificate until her dying day, 78 years later.

It's a rare person who can live by such a commitment, I wish I had, had the strength to follow her example..........

Yes, Colin, Aunt Anna was a rare person. Known to many as a Stromness schoolteacher, and ultimately Infants Mistress, cheerful and fun-loving throughout her life, she was the nearest thing to a true-life saint I, as an old atheist, ever encountered.
