I think that would more likely stand for Sunday School than Steam Ship, especially coming after the name. It could be the Deerness one, but there must be plenty other churches in Scotland called after St Ninian.

St Ninian's (church) Sunday School?
There'll be lots of churches with that name, but maybe you have some sort of family connection with one of them Peter? If Ninians is spelt with an s, and particularly if it's 'apostrophe s', it's not likely to have anything to do with the ship.

I crossed the Firth on this ship in 1943. Looks more like Lerwick than Stromness.

I agree Fred. If that isn't Lerwick Town Hall I'm a Dutchman, so goedenavond mijnheer, slaap lekker!

Certainly is Lerwick (Victoria Pier) - with the Town Hall clock tower on the skyline.

My Grandfather [John Redmore Evans] an Australian by birth, served as "Fireman" on the S S St Ninian from 14/11/1918 until 11/02/1919, when he was discharged to the Hospital Ship at Orkney [he contracted the Spanish Flu unfortunately]. I have his "original" Discharge Certificate, issued by the Board of Trade, and his certificate is signed by the Ships Master at the time whom was :-W J Williamson, and the witness to the signature was signed by the ships Engineer: John Stewart. Nb: I am happy to supply a copy of the original certificate if you would like same.
