Craig has sent in this picture of a swimming gala in Kirkwall Basin(?), shown to him by his grandfather Allan Taylor. Any information about this picture, including an accurate date (currently estimated) would be gratefully received.

My Dad, Ernie Wishart, says he can remember these swimming events and that old crockery [plates, dishes, etc.] were thrown into the basin and the swimmers who dived in had to find as many pieces as they could to win the prize. He remembers Mr Fraser of the Scapa Distillery [who was deaf & dumb] being the best prize winner every time. He said these events were well watched [and participatedin by the swimmers and divers] by adults and children.
