this butterfly taking a rest on my washing today 20/8/2010 before the mist came in

A bit weatherbeaten but looks like a Meadow Brown butterfly.

... most probably the "remains" of a 'Meadow Brown' (maniola jurtina)

I'm no expert but, could be a Meadow Brown butterfly. I saw one the other day. Flying around, in better condition than this poor fella

I'd say definitely a tattered Meadow Brown. (The backlighting distorts the colours a bit.)

No backlighting Ian it's on a white sheet on the washing line

Now that we know the name of this old flutterby can we have the name of the washing powder or would that be advertising? (only joking)

The sun must have been on the far side of the sheet, shining through it, partially backlighting the butterfly.
