How did they cope with a capsize in those days, does the helm have a buoyancy belt maybe,otherwise it looks like a set of oilskin pants,wooly jumper and clean shirt. I wonder what they're up to, a rest atween races no doot

I think the Crewman is Jacky Rendall and the Owner and Skipper is Aly Kirkpatrick. This was the golden age of Yachting as there was so many self builds in Kirkwall and Holm,namely Merlin Rockets and Snipes in Holm.A bit later on quite a few Yachting World Catamarans' were built by their Owners. All this before they started buying in supposedly faster Boats. Added by Phil Brough

Buoyancy aids were rare in these days. There is a picture in the Girnel of Dan Grieve wearing an inner tube for a buoyancy aid.

Probably taken 1955 before I built the orion. Jackie & me both joined the RAF in 1956
