I spent many happy times here with Willie and Bella at the Post Office as a child. We lived between here and the shop.

I remember visiting in the 60s and being invited through to have a cuppa with George and his Mum, who ran the Post Office. It occupied the left hand 'wing' of the building. I just remember it being very dark inside and the long counter was at the right hand side as you entered the door. There was another shop at the top of the Swanbister road which was run by Jessie Tait who lived there with her brother Alex. I remember nipping next door from the Youth Club to buy 'penny sweeties'. Good old days.

About the time of this photo and right through the war years my father, who was a coach hirer and carter, had the contract to carry bulk mail from Kirkwall to Orphir Post Office. Can anyone say what these two horse drawn vehicles might be. Look like travelling shops to me.
