It's probably time to clear up the 'mystery'. In the dark days before competition in schools was recognised as the heinous thing it is, prizes used to be awarded for good results. These are the solid gold (9ct), monogrammed, one inch diameter, medals Stromness Academy used to award to 'dux' pupils at the end of their fifth secondary year. The two in the photo date from the 1940s. I don't know when the practice was initiated or discontinued.
