RMS St Ola leaving Stromness. 1900
Picture added on 04 September 2009 at 11:36
Sorry, Neil, but I don't think this photograph was taken in 1900 - was the text on the original photograph or is this a modern addition? I am not certain of dates but am fairly sure that the central bridge house was added in the 1920s or perhaps as late as the 1930s: I have a photograph of my grandfather Capt. George Bain Swanson standing on the foredeck with the two 'pillboxes' on each end of the bridge in the background. He looks to be in his late 40s or early 50s, making the date 1915 - 1925.

I feel that I have to agree with you Bruce, if you look at picture #23848 (postcard dated 1905) I am sure it is a much older Ola than the one shown here.

Hi Bruce ,you may indeed be quite right. This was purely a guess on my part. A little research may have come up with a more accurate date.

Price - Same Ola, different bridge.
Neil, I will need to spend some time looking through papers to see if I can work out when the centre bridge house was fitted, but am somewhat snowed under at the moment, both with paper and work!
