Date is just a guess but pre 1939. This photo is one of a group of photos I have from a private photographer, Orcadian born who lived south, but took a lot of photos when he came to Kirkwall on holidays. Note the two message boys on their bikes having an early morning natter. Added by Phil brough.

It's an interesting aerial photograph similar idea as Craigs kite photos, of course in those days a zeppelin was used

I would say the photo was taken from somewhere about the archway of Tankerness House

Yes the photographer has been higher than ground level when he took the photo. Aye, hids definatly Chalmer's shop gable end- Donnie made the best patties I have ever tasted.

Yes, Alastair, I would say the photographer was sitting or standing on top of the gantry above the entry to the Tankerness House. It was a favorite place for taking BA photos' years ago. Added by Phil Brough.
