Taken from the top of the cathedral in 1947.
Can anuone tell me what or where the big buildings are just above the trees to the left of the picture?

I think the buildings you are referring to stand on the site where the school hostel stands now.

I would say the buildings are the council houses in the quadrant

The first group of buildings are the old Kirkwall Grammar School - behind that is the houses at Willowburn Road. On the other side of the Willowburn Road is the Quadrant's Housing Scheme. Just off the centre line in amongst another group of trees is the Big House that sat on the hillside above the old Ducky Pond. Slightly to the left of the centre line is the old Kirkwall Grammar School Gardening area which used to be surrounded by four high walls - "14' to 18'" Beyond that is the Old Berstane Road.
