This photograph was taken bt Austin Brown, I guess about 1955, and shows the Holm Fleet. I recognise Norman Johnston, on the extreme left. Can anyone help name the others.

I'm pretty sure the person standing on the boat with the man sitting in it is my sister, Ishbel (Doodie) Robertson and the man sittng is my father, Douglas Robertson. I can't identify the man walking on to the boat Norman is in, nor the man on the other boat, although I feeel I should be able to.
The date cannot be before 1965. We did not return to orkney to live until 1958, and I sailed with my father on a regular basis until 1965. After 1965 my sister sailed with him. When she bought Sceptre, Jack Foubister sailed with my father for a season or two and then became a very successful skipper in his own right. I'll take the photo to Holm and see what else I can glean.

Hi G Johnston.
Norman Johnston was a cousin of my grandmother Elizabeth Lillian Stephen nee Watson. Her mother Margaret Helen Johnston was the eldest sister of James Park Johnston, Norman's father. Margaret got married in Glasgow in 1901 and died in 1924 so Norman may not have met or known about his aunt or cousin Elizabeth. I have been tracing what happened to my gt grandmother's brothers and sisters and am trying to find out more about their father Nathaniel Johnston. I can email you with details I have found so far for the Johnston family tree if you would like.

Hi Pamela
That would be great if you could, I have been trying to do a family tree myself !
Any more information would be excellent. I have a few copies of birth certificates that I could email to you also.

I spoke to Norman's son, Freddie, on Saturday. He identifies the man going on to the boat to join Norman as his brother, Bertie. He himself is going down from the pier to join Alfie Flett on the boat furthest away.

This photo was definitely taken in the mid 1950s, as we left Orkney for Invergordon in 1956, and the photo has been in the family box ever since. I think that the man in the outer boat is my father, the late Danny Peterson, who sailed a snipe that Alfie Flett had built in Burray, and was assisted by the late Russell Smith.
