With reference to the comment on picture #119 (24-11-2006)
This is St. Ninian 1 as shown on an old Valentine post card, not, I think, taken in Orkney waters.

The open bridge means that this dates from before the end of the First World War when the North Company ships got wheelhouses, probably pre 1914 as the Ninian was on war service on the Pentland Firth during the conflict. See picture #1219 for a later photo. Does this one show her leaving Leith?

i crossed the Pentland Firth as a schoolboy many times durimg the 2nd World War on this venerable old lady.I was sea sick every time and more than a little grubby at the end of my crossings.
