Palace Road and Dundas Crescent, Kirkwall
Another postcard - date estimated. This one was also sent from Kirkwall to Scalloway but this time in July 1920. The recipient was Miss Harcus and the sender I or J Johnston, 42 Victoria Street, Kirkwall. Stir any memories with anyone?
The message on the card reads "Dear Miss Harcus, please send me 2 pairs of ladies gloves in light grey & ?? (I cannot decipher the last word).

Since Innistore is not in this photo it has to be much earlier. Innistore's first appearance in the census records is 1911 with three Stewart ladies owners/occupiers. It must have been built between 1901 (previous census) and 1911. The Valuation Rolls will give an accurate year.

Continuing my Kirkwall history researches I have now found from the Valuation Roll of 1906/07 the first mention of Innistore, but given as being in Brandyquoy. It has been entered as a later addition in red ink and the proprietor was a Mrs Clair Hebden or Stewart. In the 1901 census she is given as being 43 and a widow living on independent means. She owned a lot of property on Shore Street and was a native of Kirkwall. In the Valuation Roll she is not listed as living there that year. So we can now date the photo as being probably 1905 or so.

There was a Mrs Isabella Johnston at 42 Victoria Street, until 1919, when she died, aged 79. So, the date could be earlier.
