The Bishop's Palace

This is a postcard which was sent in September 1941, presumambly by a serviceman, from Smithy Cottage, Holm to Mr & Mrs F Guymer in East Finchley London. It is stamped as being passed by the censor! However I suspect that the photograph was taken much earlier than this - perhaps even earlier than 1930. Any ideas? Despite the caption saying "from the air" I suspect this was taken from the Cathedral?

Comments:
Fantastic picture Ian, note the changes from present day. No Keelies, Laverock or Pipersquoy houses etc. Is that the West End standing proud in the background? And the Balfour Hospital top right?
When was the "gate" removed? I have a picture taken from a similar vantage point with the gate in place.

I was just having a random search, and picture #3279 is a later version showing roughly the same area. Much changes over the years
