I'm guessing that the shop on the left s Sutherlands the Chemists, judging by what is above the door?

... It is a mortar with a pestle (didn't find better translations) ... Thus indicating ... Here is a chemist ;-)

This shop was indeed a Pharmacy, with a "Mortar & Pestle" sign. In my school days, and up to about 1946, it was called Stewart and Heddle.

At this time, along with the pharmacy downstreet (called D.M.Wright), both shops were aquired by Boots the Chemists. Over the years the two shops eventually became one, and the shop in this picture was sold to the then British European Airways. Nowadays it is of course Ridgway Travel.

Beautiful old long standing architecture. The archeology must be fabulous there.
