This is the front door on the Old Custom House in Longhope.
This entrance was built by Mr Wm Sutherland who was a real leading fugure in Longhope in his time.
Mr Sutherland ran a very succesful shop and had a horse van which he traveled all around the Island with, and along with his family they ran a slaughter house and a market garden as well as doing smiddy work.
Mr Sutherland sometims got the byname of Yoma or Bo- Yoma as he always tried to get his customers to by Yoma loaf and Bo as he adressed all he met as "yes noo bo."
William was the Hon Sec to the Lifeboat for a long number of years and on his death his daughter Minnie took on that role and was the first lady hon sec in all of the RNLI in country.
I have included some more photos of Wm Sutherlands endeavours as I truly think he must have been a man of great energy and a person who never got the recognition he richly deserved.
If anyone has more on this man's work I would like to hear about it.
