The nearest building was called The Station, and presumably had to do with the Herring Fishing. The Boatbuilding shed on the beach a litle bit further on was owned by the Petrie family. The pile of material nearer than the Station could be peats as I have been told that they used to be landed there.

My grandparents came from Flotta. I remember Grandmother speaking of men from South Ronaldsay cutting peats on Flotta.
As a lot of the peats were taken home by boat it did not matter if the peats were on the island that you lived or a neighbouring island as they had to be boated home anyway.
Was there no moss on South Ronaldsay?
The Stroma folk cut peats at Gills in Caithness as there was little or no moss on Stroma.

And I remember my Grandmother saying that the Flotta folk used to sit in the shore face and stone the South Ronaldsay men when they came to take our peats!
