Another in the very short series "Orkney car scene in the 80s". Here's an example of how motoring used to be much more fun than it is now. Billy Johnston (BJ) turned up with this Rover V8 engined Mark 1 Escort at the annual vintage rally one year. I think the Craigie boys from Dale were involved in the construction somewhere too. This just couldn't happen nowadays I suppose .... "Hello Norwich Union - I've bunged a V8 engine in an Escort. Quote me happy !!"

That wis the days. We need more of these pictures to show the young eens when cars were real and the only chips in them were eaten in the gravel pit.

You'd be more likely to find a Cossie lump under the bonnet of those, nowadays.

That photo could have been taken about 1986/87, I can't remember if BJ was the first local owner, but it was built by Gordie Stewart in Scrabster, some local owners included BJ, Graham Drever and Stevie Mackay who rolled it during an autocross in South Ronaldsay ending its days.

Yea i remember the day it rolled! I was a marshall at the autocross which was near the Hope. Great spectator sport when Stevie got behind the wheel!
All i heard wes an engine revving and an almighty YeeeeHawwww!! she rolled over on the bonnet not the roof if i remember so not too much damage was caused, then he kept on going and eventually came to a halt when the engine cooked as no water was left in the rad. I remember looking at it in a shed near The Hope afterwards. What a waste when we think about it now.
