If you look at the 1870s picture of Kirkwall, picture #3184, and notice the relative positions of the Cathedral, Viewforth, Lilybank and Daisybank, you can see that both pictures were taken from precisely the same angle, though perhaps not the same distance. There's been a bit of building going on...
