So we have a Greek scholar amongst us now. I'm quite happy to call it a grave stone.

Can anyone tell me where this "Jolly" family would have come from? Being a Jolly myself, I just wondered if we could have been related as my great grandfather - John Jolly - had 3 brothers but they didn't keep up. I think one lived in Shapinsay, another in Orphir. John Jolly came from Rispond near Durness but I think the other brothers were born in Orkney.

William Jolly was my gr great grandfather. Their daughter Margaret Jolly married my gr grandfather Robert Garden, who became known as the Merchant Prince of Orkney. I have written some articles on this for the Northern Times which you should be able to google.
