Deerness school

Now abandoned. I was a pupil there during the 1940s. Photo taken August, 2008, during a nostalgic tour of Deerness...

Comments:
Me granny wis there late 19th/early 20th centuries. I mind her speaking of the strange peedie boy who spent all his playtime sitting under the wall reading a book. His name wis Edwin.

My parents and I lived in the Schoolhouse between 1971-7. It was the first time we had ever lived in the countryside. We had a pet hen called Mildoo, who was hatched in my dad's lab. Although I only lived in Orkney for a few years, I have happy memories of deep snow, thick mist, and fun weekends. But it is sad to see such an empty and neglected shell.

My great-grandfather David Wood was a teacher at this school in or about 1885/86 when he left to teach at the Haugh of Glass School. I would be grateful to know if there are any photos of him in your records. Kind regards, Lyn Mucenieks
