Capt. T D Scott & Family

We are now getting photos of old Orcadians on the site and I thought this may be of interest. It is from a Dageurrotype dated 1 Jan. 1847 and is of my great grandfather and family, Captain Thomas Douglas Scott of Crantit. He was born in Cross, Sanday in 1815 son of John Scott and Barbara Spence with three brothers, James, John and Richard, and three sisters, Barbara, Margaret and Janet.
If anyone has connections with that family I would like to hear from them.
Capt Scott was a master mariner, sold his small fleet of four full rigged ships in 1855 and bought the manor house of Crantit, Crantit Farm and Nether Scapa.
Went back to sea in 1869 with full rigged clipper LAJU which featured in one of my earlier pictures on this site.

Comments:
Tom, was your great-grandfather white-headed by 1863? If you look at "Shoal and Sheaf" page 133 there is a gentleman in a top hat about three inches in from the left and an inch down from the top that looks a bit like him, though maybe he's a bit too old.
