British Channel Fleet in Kirkwall Bay, 1898

A Tom Kent picture. Bluejackets lined up on the pier. Interesting to note a radio aerial on the Harbourmasters Office even then.

Comments:
An interesting photograph which also shows at the bottom left a gentleman in uniform. He is wearing an eight button frock coat, carries a walking cane with white gloves in his left hand and is also wearing an 'English' style police helmet. No cap badge was worn on this headdress which was used for special occasions only and not for day to day duties. He is in fact Police Constable James Grant, of the Orkney Police Force, who is easily identifiable by his white moustache.
