I would say that was Stromness Pier, now extended for the present day ferries, and that is the area next to Coplands Dock on the Garson shore in the background. The pier in pic # 12671 shows a similar construction with the end pile slightly tilted as well.

North Shields registered, pity we can't see the number then could get the name,
must have hit the local paper at the time. Most likely a drift net boat at the herring fishing.

I think it is an old pier at Stromness looking towards Cairston

Looks like the RNLI lifeboat Good Shepherd or John A Hay in the background.
