Building with a strange roof - on Stronsay
Picture added on 20 June 2008
I assume this has been a kirk at one time, both because of the strange roof, and because of the blocked up arched windows at the big door.

This type is called a "half-hipped roof". It is a very solid roof construction best known from the windy coastal areas in Danmark and the windy mountain areas in Germany (Bavarian Wood, Black Forest) as well.
There are some indications that parts of the buildings of Stove model farm, Sanday, once had half hipped roofs, too.

I noticed the kirk in Holm is of similar design

This was a Methodist Chapel but I have no idea when it was built. There were over three hundred Methodists in Stronsay in the late seventeen early eighteen hundreds. The building was used as a drill hall until 1886 when the new drill hall was built. It was also the Yearnasetter barn for a long time and is now used to store machinery.

The Building has been renovated 2014/15 and is a fine craft centre
