The boat is the Jessie Ellen, Stevie Mowat used to run her in the summer months from Stromness to Moaness pier on Hoy

Would that have been the same gale in early 1984 that washed the fill out of the pier at the double houses? I seem to think that it was in the early part of the year, when I was in first year at Stromness Academy, 1983-84.

I remember standing in Miss MacDonald's French classroom - one of the portakabins at the bottom of the playground - watching the waves in the harbour. There was next to no bairns at the school that day, for none of the bus drivers thought it was safe to be on the roads (at that time, I think it was just up to the individual drivers to decide) but us Stromness ones had to go to school nevertheless. I don't think we did very much work, though!

I think this was about 75 or 77 as i was still at school.

I think Graham is about right with the date 83-85, she got a new ford engine fitted when she was repaired,
