crockness martello tower?
Anonymous comment added on 16 February 2008
Millbrae, Burness, Sanday, originally a windmill base, then a watch tower during WW1. Sanday's original climbing wall!
There's a similar one in North Ronaldsay.

definately not crockness martello tower, it is built of sandstone blocks all cut to shape. the mortar used then has not weathered away and has outlasted the sandstone, anybody know what the mix of the mortar consisted of?

I have heard that egg shells were used- might that be true?

I have heard some of the old timers mention eggs too John, also dung and lime.
Whatever they used it has stood the test of time.
