Hi, Billy Sinclair was a Master Marniner. I am sure he was harbour master at Kirkwall Pier before he went to Orkney Harbours at Scapa as a pilot, and he is retired now and stays in Holm.

Hi Stewart
Do you know Williams family history at all. I think he may be related to me, but am not sure at present, any information would be appreciated.

ROUND THE WORLD AND BACK
By the time he was twenty, Billy Sinclair had been round the world four times – earning just £75 a year to start with. Then he was among the last of an Orkney generation who saw service amid the whaling fleets of the South Atlantic. Captain William S. Sinclair looks back at his career, including his time as coxswain of the Kirkwall lifeboat when he was honoured by royalty.

Billy is my cousin he started off as a cadet wih Salvesens, and served on their cargo ships and whalers in the South Atlantic. After the whaling he went on Salvesens North Sea Traders. He then went into Pilotage in Preston for some time before returning to Orkney to take over as Harbour Master in Kirkwall to replace his father Capt. John Sinclair on his retirement. After that he went on to Pilotage at Flotta he is now retired living in Holm. My father John Sinclairs brother was Chief Engineer on St. Ola 1,2 and3 before retiring.
