[Interesting sign lying on the shore too- what was that for? - Steven]

Could be a BP coastal tanker lying at the "Amelia" berth. The tankers berthed there or at East #1 until the pier was lengthened about 1988 and new pipes were laid down to the West berth beyond the Linkspan. Petrol was of course then pumped up to the Shore Street Depot before the days of H&S sensibly decided it should be more safely stored at former MOD depot at Scapa when it was taken over by Esso.

The first word on the sign looks like the word Danger. There was a sewer ran out there its been smashed wae the gale and I'd say it would been on end o the sewer. It must have been repaired as mind sewer after 1953 gales but never saw sign on it.That would be opposite Meils which is now FUSION.
