A very long Orkney longhouse with a turf roof.
Picture added on 10 January 2008
This is slightly misleading since it used to be a normal 'but & ben', with thatch roof, until the present owner took in the steading with the house and roofed it all with turf.
My father was born there.

Not sure what you mean by building cluster, but Ortie has considerably more buildings in close proximity. Google/Bing Images Ortie Sanday Orkney

Thank you Tommy G and Steve. What a lovely conversation over the years! As I am from "The Great Down Under" ( i.e. Australia) I am not too sure what a "but and ben" is, or a "steading". But I get the gist of what you are meaning. What I was meaning by a "cluster" of buildings was if there were more buildings such as other farm houses in this group that are not in the photo. Hope all is well with you.

My partner and I tried to visit Burness on Sanday last October(2008). We were visiting from Australia (our name is Burness). Unfortunately the weather was against us. Could you tell us if this is the only building cluster at Burness. It certainly appears that way from Google earth. We would be most interested to know any information.
