Proud Statsraad Lehmkuhl
Statsraad Lehmkuhl is Norway's largest and oldest square-rigged sailing ship. She is also one of the world's best-preserved ships, thanks to the Norwegian parliament that in 1978 decided to preserve her.
Originally named Grossherzog Friedrich August, this three-master steel barque was built in 1914 in Bremerhaven, Germany by the Tecklenborg Company to sail in the German merchant Navy. In 1923 the Norwegian Ship Owners Association purchased the ship under the initiative of Kristofer Lehmkuhl, a former Norwegian cabinet minister, and the ship was renamed Statsraad Lehmkuhl in commemoration of Mr. Lehmkuhl's governmental service and ship-training efforts in Norway.
During the winter of 1997-1998 at the Laksevag shipyard in Bergen, Statsraad Lehmkuhl underwent the most extensive restoration in its history due to necessary maritime safety regulations. Even though the most modern safety measures were incorporated, the original fittings and antique value and appearance of the ship were preserved.
Today Statsraad Lehmkuhl offers a variety of sailing cruises to the general public, including coastal trips and day tours. The ship can also be admired in tall ship festivals and cultural gatherings in European harbors.
