The possible "giveaway" in this photo Sandy is, believe it or not, the ventilator on the wall.
I wonder if it could be an old home made air-raid shelter from the world war 2 era.The ventilator certainly dates from that time, 1939-1945.
You'll just have to tell me where?
I say home made by the way, because most of the public shelters were made of mass concrete.

there are some of these air raid shelters all over Orkney in some strange places and all the ones I have seen are stone built. All the primary schools had one or two. Stenness School had 2. 1 for the boys and 1 for the girls. they were built to a goverenment design with a door in the end facing the wall of the school and an escape hatch at the other end. i have seen a website giving the design but don't ask me where.

Ootanaboot is correct. It is in the garden of No 9 Holm Road. It was a WWII air raid shelter.

Are you sure this isn't in the garden of No 13?

Hi Sandy I lived there for 9 years and the name of the house is Vindon, 13 Holm Road, Kirkwall- just right up the road from you Sandy. In fact I used to give you a lift to work some times. The air raid shelter was one of two the second one was flattened and replaced with a garage, then belonging to Bobo Budge the builder. There were 2 doors. I blocked the one up and stored fire wood in it for years. Oh, and the front door was home made out of Gyproc pallets courtesy of Orkney Builders.
