An iron hoop hanging outside the gate house of Geramount Lodge, Sanday. I wonder what it was for?
Picture added on 28 September 2007
Comments:
It was quite possibly for playing with. Bairns used to have a stick and pushed the hoop along with it. It was called I think, a "gird and wheel"
but I stand to be corrected.

I used to have a gird when I was young. It had a cleat attatched to it to bowl it along. If I'm not mistaken you can just see the cleat at the bottom of the hoop in the photo

Try a cleek and a gird, common in Stronsay also used for barrel making to hold the staves together before fitting the hickory hoops. The barrel ends were held in by steel hoops
