Planning dilemma over satellite dish. Do you remember it? The day before this photograph was taken the dish had been an ordinary white colour. It was February 1987 and the Queen was to visit as part of the 850th anniversary celebrations of the Cathedral. Councillors adjourned a meeting of OIC planning Committee to walk down the Strynd and have a look for themselves and decided that "The Queen should not walk out of St Magnus Cathedral this August only to see a television satellite dish on top of a Broad Street shop)". On hearing the decision, Frances MacLennan, daughter of the owner of OTE, got her paints out and transformed the dish with an immaculately painted Union flag.
