I grew up doon the road from this house and have always thought that it would be the best spot for a house

The old house was called SCORRIDALE. There is an interesting item about this house and it's inhabitants in the December 07 issue of SIB FOLK NEWS - the newsletter of the Orkney Family History Society.

My great grandmother, Tomima Groundwater (1851-1940, and her ten brothers and sisters were born/lived here, with their parents John and Williamina (née Moncrieff) and, for some time, their grandmother, Margaret Moncrieff (née Sinclair). Two children died in infancy. The family moved to Scorridale sometime between 1855 and 1860 and Williamina died there in 1918. It is possible that one daughter Annie may have carried on living there after that but I don't know. This is probably far more information than you wanted!! Very interested in any more information on the Moncrieff side.

I missed this earlier. Thanks to Jane Harris for pointing it out. My Great Great Grandfather, John Groundwater was born here and he married Williamina Moncrieff (see above). My Great Grandfather was James Farquhar Groundwater, also born in Scorriedale although my Grandfather, also James, was born in Kirkwall. He used Scorriedale as a sort of holiday home until the mid fifties. I remember visiting them there on a couple of occasions. I have a few old pictures of it to post.
